Concussion Rehabilitation

Concussion rehabilitation at Progression PT is a comprehensive, multi system approach to recovering from mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), one of the most complex and misunderstood conditions in sports medicine and rehabilitation today.

A concussion is not simply a “ding to the head.” It is a physiological disruption of brain function that can affect cognition, vision, balance, vestibular processing, sleep, mood, and exertion tolerance, and without proper management, symptoms can linger for weeks, months, or longer. Our physical therapists in Princeton and Somerville, NJ are trained in evidence based concussion rehabilitation protocols to help athletes and non athletes alike achieve full recovery and a safe return to activity.

Our concussion rehabilitation program begins with a thorough clinical assessment that evaluates:

  • Symptom severity
  • Cognitive function
  • Oculomotor and visual processing
  • Vestibular function
  • Cervical spine involvement
  • Aerobic exercise tolerance

Based on this multi domain evaluation, treatment may include:

  • Cervical spine manual therapy and exercise, for cervicogenic headache and dizziness
  • Vestibular rehabilitation, for dizziness and balance deficits
  • Vision therapy exercises, for oculomotor dysfunction and visual motion sensitivity
  • Sub-symptom threshold aerobic exercise, guided by the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test protocol
  • Graded return to activity and return to sport progressions, following protocols such as SCAT and CISG guidelines

We work collaboratively with neurologists, sports medicine physicians, athletic trainers, and school administrators to ensure a coordinated, safe return to school, work, and sport. Whether you suffered a concussion during athletic competition, a motor vehicle accident, a fall, or any other mechanism, Progression PT provides the expert, multi system rehabilitation you need to recover fully and confidently.
