Balance & Fall Prevention

Falls are one of the leading causes of injury, hospitalization, and loss of independence among older adults, but they are not an inevitable part of aging.

At Progression PT, our Balance and Fall Prevention program is designed to:

  • Identify the specific causes of balance impairment in each patient
  • Deliver targeted, evidence based treatment to reduce fall risk
  • Restore confidence in movement

We serve:

  • Older adults
  • Individuals with neurological conditions
  • Individuals with vestibular disorders
  • Anyone who has experienced a recent fall
  • Anyone noticing increasing difficulty with balance in Princeton and Somerville, NJ

Balance is a complex, multi system function that relies on input from three key systems:

  • Vestibular system: inner ear
  • Visual system: eyes
  • Somatosensory system: proprioception from muscles and joints in your feet, ankles, and spine

When any of these systems are impaired because of aging, disease, medication effects, inner ear dysfunction, or neurological changes, balance deteriorates and fall risk increases.

Our physical therapists use validated clinical assessments to quantify balance deficits and track progress:

  • Berg Balance Scale
  • Timed Up and Go Test (TUG)
  • Dynamic Gait Index (DGI)
  • Modified Falls Efficacy Scale

Treatment in our Balance and Fall Prevention program may include:

  • Sensory retraining and integration exercises
  • Progressive balance and proprioception challenges
  • Gait training and fall recovery strategies
  • Lower extremity strengthening
  • Vestibular rehabilitation when inner ear involvement is identified
  • Vision vestibular integration exercises
  • Home safety education
  • Guidance on medications that can contribute to fall risk, with coordination with physicians when appropriate

Whether you have already experienced a fall, feel unsteady on your feet, or have been diagnosed with Parkinsons disease, peripheral neuropathy, vestibular dysfunction, or another condition affecting balance, Progression PTs Balance and Fall Prevention program can help you regain stability, safety, and independence.
