TMJ Therapy

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) dysfunction, also called TMD or TMJD, is a condition affecting the joint that connects your jaw to your skull, and it is far more treatable than most patients realize.

At Progression PT, our physical therapists provide specialized TMJ Therapy for patients in Princeton and Somerville, NJ who are experiencing jaw pain, facial pain, clicking or popping of the jaw, limited mouth opening, headaches, ear pain, neck pain, or difficulty chewing. Physical therapy is a highly effective, non invasive, and drug free approach to treating TMJ dysfunction, and is often recommended as a first line treatment before splints, injections, or surgical intervention.

The temporomandibular joint is one of the most complex joints in the body, capable of opening, closing, protrusion, retrusion, and lateral deviation, and is intimately connected to the cervical spine, muscles of mastication, and the nervous system.

TMJ dysfunction can result from:

  • Trauma, such as a blow to the jaw or whiplash injury
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding or clenching)
  • Postural dysfunction
  • Joint hypermobility or hypomobility
  • Disc displacement
  • Osteoarthritis
  • A combination of factors

Treatment for TMJ dysfunction at Progression PT may include:

  • Manual therapy to the jaw joint and cervical spine
  • Joint mobilization techniques
  • Soft tissue release of the muscles of mastication (masseter, temporalis, pterygoids)
  • Postural correction
  • Jaw movement re-education and coordination exercises
  • Relaxation and bruxism management strategies
  • A customized home exercise program

We also collaborate with dentists and oral surgeons when appropriate to ensure a comprehensive approach to your care.
