Vestibular Therapy

Vestibular therapy at Progression PT is a specialized form of physical therapy designed to evaluate and treat disorders of the vestibular system, the complex sensory system in the inner ear that controls your sense of balance, spatial orientation, and eye-head coordination.

When the vestibular system is disrupted by disease, injury, or degeneration, patients can experience debilitating symptoms including dizziness, vertigo, unsteadiness, visual disturbances, and difficulty with daily activities. Our vestibular trained physical therapists in Princeton and Somerville, NJ offer expert evaluation and individualized treatment to help patients find lasting relief and regain confidence in their movement.

The most common condition treated with vestibular therapy is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), a condition in which calcium carbonate crystals (otoconia) become displaced within the semicircular canals of the inner ear, causing brief but intense episodes of spinning vertigo triggered by head position changes.

BPPV is highly treatable with specific repositioning maneuvers, including:

  • Epley Maneuver
  • Semont Maneuver
  • Barbecue Roll

These can resolve symptoms in as few as one to three sessions when performed by a skilled clinician.

Beyond BPPV, vestibular therapy is effective for:

  • Vestibular neuritis and labyrinthitis
  • Meniere’s disease
  • Acoustic neuroma (post-surgical)
  • Vestibular migraine
  • Chronic dizziness
  • Post-concussion dizziness
  • Cervicogenic dizziness
  • Unilateral or bilateral vestibular hypofunction

Treatment involves:

  • Vestibular adaptation and habituation exercises
  • Gaze stabilization training
  • Balance and gait training
  • Visual-vestibular integration exercises
  • Sensory reweighting strategies

If you experience dizziness when lying down or rolling over in bed, feel off balance when walking or turning, experience a sensation of the room spinning, or have been diagnosed with a vestibular disorder, Progression PT can help. We serve patients throughout Mercer County and Somerset County, NJ who are searching for vestibular therapy, dizziness treatment, or BPPV treatment near them.
